2,000 Solar Lights Delivered in Guatemala

Can you imagine a life in which each evening, as the sun goes down, you and your family are plunged into total darkness? This is the reality for 775 million impoverished people around the world who live without power, including families living in the municipality of Poptún, Petén in Guatemala.

In December of 2023, LWB worked with a local organization, OWC, to deliver 2,000 Solarpuff solar lights to children and families in some of the most remote villages in Guatemala. These waterproof lights last up to five years, providing eight hours of light for studying, cooking, family time, or simply walking safely outside to visit the outhouse.

Solar Lights Delivered to Families

Many excited faces greeted us as we distributed the solar lights to local families. We also provided Ecofilters to purify the local water which is unsafe to drink.

We visited the home of Evelyn, one of the village families without electricity. Several children live in the home, so we made sure to give them two solar lights. The little ones were mesmerized by the lantern’s warm glow!

We also visited the beautiful girls pictured below in their home. Gloria, the eldest, has been keeping house while their mother spends most of her time caring for their father in the hospital. Gloria and little sister, Darlin, enjoy school and especially love to paint. We can’t wait to see the masterpieces that they can now create after the sun goes down.

Through our recent Give Light campaign, LWB supporters helped us to meet (and surpass!) our goal of providing 1,000 children with safe, renewable solar lights through our Special Projects initiative.
