For the last 16 years, LWB has been committed to helping children born with heart defects. Since this community first came together back in 2003 to save the life of one baby boy in China, we’ve helped over a thousand children receive heart surgery. As our work has expanded, we’ve realized just how desperate the situation is for children born with heart issues in the poorest countries around the world. In Uganda, for example, there is only one hospital in the entire country which can provide even basic cardiac operations. They have a backlog of hundreds of children needing services. Far too many children will pass away while waiting for their turn for surgery.
We want to introduce you to three children who have been accepted for care at Wolfson Medical Center in Israel. Each of them will NOT survive without surgery, and we hope you’ll join these heart warriors to help them fight for LIFE.
The first child we want you to meet is precious Baby Favour. This beautiful five-month-old was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries. Our cardiac advisors have told us she needs immediate surgery to survive. It’s critical that she gets to the hospital in Israel as soon as possible. Baby Favour's mom is a single parent who is completely committed to saving her daughter’s life. She lives 8 hours away from the capital, so each time Favour gets sick, she has to make the long journey by bus. Because of their poverty, she and Favour sleep on the floor of any church who will have them when they travel for medical appointments.
Then there is darling Little Al. This two-year-old was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare condition which involves four defects in the heart. Most infants with this condition receive surgery by the time they are six months old. With every month that passes, Little Al runs the risk of increasing cyanosis and serious health complications.
Finally we want you to meet sweet Mary Martha. Like Baby Al, she has unrepaired Tetralogy of Fallot and has become extremely weak. Mary Martha gets winded just from walking, and she frequently must squat because she gets out of breath from a lack of oxygen. Mary Martha needed surgery years ago. If she is unable to get to the hospital in Israel SOON, this beautiful girl has no hope of surviving.
$15,000 is needed for each child's surgery, along with travel costs. We know that’s an enormous sum. But we have faith in our amazing community. We have seen this community rally together to save the lives of so many wonderful children, who are such blessings to this world.
When we come together in love, each giving whatever is possible, we know miracles happen. And we want Favour, Little Al, and Mary Martha to get their miracles.
