Cleft Lip and Palate in Guatemala: Baby Ana

Less than one month ago, Baby Ana was born with unilateral cleft lip and palate in Guatemala. Ana’s mother, Doña Gloria, was concerned and distressed when she first saw her baby. For the first two days after giving birth, Gloria felt desperate because she did not know how to feed her newborn daughter.

All this week, we are raising critical funds to provide nutrition for babies born with cleft as we prepare to send a surgery team to Guatemala later this year. We are working side-by-side with Partners in Surgery to make sure every baby who comes to see our team will qualify for surgery. One of the babies waiting for his lip repair operation is tiny little Zack.

Since 2004, we’ve sent international medical teams to China and Cambodia to perform life-changing surgeries for children born with this medical need. Now, we’re excited to announce that plans are being made to send a medical team to Guatemala later in 2022!

Archie’s Adoption

In 2017, an eight-day-old newborn named Archie joined our Cambodia foster care program. He was handed to wonderful foster parents who were already fostering two older children. Quickly, Baby Archie won their hearts, and the entire family found themselves in love with this precious baby boy.

Where we work in Cambodia, the number of children living at the local landfill has risen exponentially. We have been doing everything we can to make sure the older children moving to the landfill have a chance to begin or continue their education. As you can imagine, many of the older children are reluctant to attend school for the first time as they are embarrassed about having to start in kindergarten or first grade. Our solution? We’ve opened a special “catch-up class” for older kids so they could learn with their peers.

For a young child, the gift of a loving family is truly invaluable. In a perfect world, every child would be able to be raised within their biological family, but that is, unfortunately, not always a viable option. In these instances, the role of foster care becomes key. A loving foster care family provides stability, love, and a feeling of belonging for children whose biological families are no longer living or who are unable to provide for them due to any number of circumstances.

This week, we have set a goal to find 20 additional sponsors for our foster care program in India. This program has been a dream of LWB’s since 2016 because we believe so fully that every child deserves a family. India has one of the largest populations of children in orphanage care, so expansion of our successful foster care program here from other countries was a definite goal.

Unity Initiative 2022: A Flurry of Hope

2022 began in a flurry of hope, thanks to supporters of our Unity Initiative. Our Unity Initiative exists to support impoverished families who are unable to provide medical care for their children. Without this program, many families in rural China would be unable to get their children the treatment they need.

Meeting Grace

While visiting our Uganda programs this past month, our US team was able to visit a special girl who has been a big part of LWB’s story: Grace from Uganda. If you have followed her journey, you know LWB arranged for her to have surgery in first Kenya and then Belgium to remove thousands of tumors from her abdomen. It would never have happened without countless people around the world lifting her up and funding her life-saving medical care.
