Beginnings

Our nutrition program began in 2003 when we started supplying extra food and formula to two orphanages in China. The results were wonderful, and we were quickly able to see a difference in the health of the children. We believe proper nutrition is the foundation for many of LWB's other programs.

For instance, in our Medical program, we sometimes find it necessary to provide extra nutrition to children before and after surgery. This particularly applies to children with heart or cleft defects who may arrive at the orphanage in an undernourished state.

In our Foster Care program, we supply specialized formula to families caring for children with medical needs. This is a wonderful combination, enabling the children to receive the best formula for their needs and the one-on-one attention of their foster parent during feedings.

We have found in our Education program that a well-fed child will have an easier time concentrating and learning, which is so vital to their future life outside of the orphanage.

For those families who donate on a regular basis, we suggest an automatic monthly sponsorship. This helps to ensure that we will always have funds available to place the next order for an orphanage. Any amount is welcome. Many families pledge $25 per month, but we also have families who pledge more or less.

Most of our programs are funded by orphanage groups, consisting of families who have previously adopted from that particular orphanage and want to provide extra nutrition to the children still living there. Several of the orphanages in our program have few or no adoptive families to support them. Other generous families have stepped forward to take these children into their hearts and lives, giving them a brighter future through regular donations.

One-time donations are always welcome and truly do make a difference. Through individual donations and fundraisers, we are able to purchase vital "extras" such as cleft bottles, vitamins, and specialized formulas for children with medical needs. These donations are also used to cover start-up costs for new nutrition programs.
