Our History
In 2003, Amy Eldridge, Executive Director of Love Without Boundaries, made her first visit to a Chinese orphanage, and what she experienced there changed her life forever. “I don’t think anyone can walk past rows and rows of baby cribs, filled with children who have lost their parents, and not have their heart be changed”.
In the far corner of one of the baby rooms she visited, she was shown a tiny baby boy who was so very blue. She remembers that day vividly, as she had never seen a child who was dying of heart disease before. “I stood by his crib and watched as he labored to breathe and naively asked when his surgery would be. The orphanage doctor sadly shook his head as they did not have the funds for his surgery. It was a defining moment in my life to realize that without outside assistance, the little boy in front of me would actually pass away.”
Amy returned to the U.S. and began fundraising to help Baby Kang receive the life saving operation he needed. The outpouring of support from the adoption community was incredible, and funds were raised not only to help Baby Kang, but many other children as well. When she returned to China to visit the children post surgery, she was presented with a flag from the local government which said, “Love Makes No Boundaries Between Countries”. Soon after, Love Without Boundaries was formed.
In August of 2003, five adoptive parents came together with the dream of beginning a foundation which would provide the most compassionate and loving care possible to orphaned children in China. They promised each other to treat every child as if they were their own, and to work each day to make sure that every penny possible would reach the children in need.
What has happened since 2003 has been amazing for Amy to watch. “I remember when we first began, I told everyone that if we could help save the lives of even five children a year, that it would be beyond my wildest dreams. I truly believe that each time a child’s life is saved, the world changes forever. That child could grow up to be a doctor or a teacher or a mother or father who will help raise a new generation. To now know that LWB has impacted the lives of thousands of children…..that is a blessing which truly humbles me.
Soon after the initial surgeries, LWB added nutrition to their programs, providing high quality formula to orphanages who needed assistance. When LWB learned that some children with special needs were unable to attend public school, they decided to bring school to the children instead, and the first Believe in Me school was built inside an orphanage.
In early 2004, foster care was added to the list of programs they provide, and they quickly learned that children who struggle in an institutional setting absolutely thrive with their own mom and dad.
Just five years later, LWB has worked with over 100 orphanages in China, touching the lives of countless children in need. But despite the rapid growth, the core vision has remained the same. “We still wake up each day believing that every child born has infinite worth and deserves to know love. And we know our work is only able to impact lives because of the kindness and generosity of our supporters. We never take that for granted. When you look an orphaned child in the eyes and tell them you will help, you cannot go back on that promise. We have made a long term commitment to the children of China, and that commitment inspires us daily to be the absolute best charity we can be.”
