Sanmenxia is a new and developing city in western Henan Province, bordering the Yellow River. The city is situated in a hilly area with mountains and hills making up over 90 percent of the city’s total territory. It covers an area of 10,496 square kilometers and has a population of 2.19 million. As many as 57 kinds of minerals have been discovered in Samnexia, such as gold, bauxite, and coal. With the advantages of its abundant resources, the city has established a thriving industrial system.
The Sanmenxia foster care program began in November 2008 in cooperation with the Sanmenxia Social Welfare Institute. Fifteen children were initially placed with local foster families to launch this successful program. Currently there are 12 children living with loving foster families. All of the children have special needs, such as cleft lip and palate, congenital heart defects, and mild cerebral palsy, and they range in age from one year to twelve years. Not many international adoptions have occurred from the Sanmexia SWI at this point in time, but a number of children have been adopted locally. We remain hopeful that more children will be adopted as the program continues.
The sponsorship cost for this program is $35 per month. Each child in the program has two sponsors, which enables full coverage of the program’s expenses. Sponsors will receive monthly reports that include the child’s basic information, developmental updates, and photographs of the child.
